El Bages

El Bages comprises part of the middle of the course of the Llobregat river and its centres houses the Pla del Bages, including the district capital, Manresa, and the most important towns. It borders on the north-west with the Cardona area and on the east with the plan saparating the Plana de Vic from the Pla del Bages, the Moianès sub-district, centred in Moià. The layout of the land in this district gives it a Mediterranean climate with slight continental trends. Most of the rain falls in the spring and the autumn, whereas the summer is dry and the winter is cold and often foggy. El Bages has traditionally been the most active of Catalonia’s inland districts. Organised around its capital, Manresa, its main economic activity is industry of different kinds. Textiles are important and derived from the installation of famous textile colonies the length of the Llobregat and its affluents. The metal industry, chemicals and food products are also important, especially in Manresa and surrounding areas, together with the potassium salt facilities in Balsareny, Súria and Cardona. In the past, agriculture was always important and Bages was once an important wine making district. Nowadays, however, most of the farmland is used to grow cereals, particularly barley and fodder. As for the livestock sector, the district is known for its pigs and cows.

El Bages comprende parte del curso medio del río Llobregat y en su parte central alberga el Pla del Bages, donde se ubican su capital, Manresa, y las poblaciones más importantes. Al noroeste se encuentra el área de Cardona y al este, en la altiplanicie que separa la Plana de Vic del Pla del Bages, la subcomarca del Moianès, que se centra en el pueblo de Moià. La particular orografía de la comarca hace que goce de un clima mediterráneo con una ligera tendencia continental. Las lluvias se concentran principalmente en la primavera y el otoño mientras que el verano es seco y cálido y el invierno es frío y presenta nieblas frecuentes. El Bages ha sido tradicionalmente la comarca más activa del interior de Cataluña. Organizada entorno a su capital, Manresa, su actividad económica principal es la industria, que se encuentra muy diversificada. La presencia de la industria textil es importante y su origen se remonta a la instalación, a lo largo del curso del Llobregat y de sus afluentes, de las famosas colonias textiles. También poseen un peso considerable las industrias metalúrgicas, químicas y de la alimentación, sobre todo en Manresa y sus alrededores, y las explotaciones de sales potásicas de Balsareny, Súria y Cardona. En el pasado, la agricultura tuvo un papel destacado e históricamente el Bages fue gran comarca vitivinícola. Sin embargo, en la actualidad dominan los cultivos de cereales, especialmente la cebada y forrajes. En cuanto a la ganadería, la comarca destaca por sus cabañas porcinas y bovinas.
