GANDESA
(CAPITAL DE LA TERRA ALTA)
Gandesa is the capital of the county and has 2,640 inhabitants. Despite its industrial and commercial growth, it has carefully preserved its artistic and historical heritage. The municipal district encompasses an extensive plateau surrounded by mountains, including the Cavalls range and the peak called Puig Cavaller. The archaeological site of Coll del Moro, at a distance of six kilometres from the town, contains three necropolises from various periods and an Iberian site. Gandesa has always been a crossroads. As happens with most of the towns in Terra Alta, the first written mention of the municipality goes back to the year 1153, when it was donated by Ramon Berenguer IV to the Templars as an integral part of the extensive district of Miravet. One of the most notable historical events that took place in Gandesa was the royal wedding between the heir to the Crown of Aragon, prince James II, and Leonor, the daughter of Ferdinand IV of Castile. This marriage is known as the “Farce of Gandesa” since it never came to be consummated. Because of its resistance during the first Carlist war, the town received the title of “Very Loyal, Heroic and Immortal City of Gandesa”. The old town was fortified until the 19th century. Its monuments include the archpriestal church of l’Assumpció from the 13th century, with ornamentation of Morisco inspiration. It was enlarged in the Baroque and Neoclassical styles in the 16th and 17th centuries. The old town hall is a stately building from the 15th century, forming an example of Catalan Gothic civil architecture. Another notable building is the prison, which could be the old castle-palace of the Hospitallers. It dates from the 13th and 14th centuries and was reformed in the 17th century. One of the architectural jewels of Gandesa is its impressive co-operative wine cellar which, like others in the county, was built in 1919 by Gaudí’s disciple, Cèsar Martinell, following the Art Nouveau or “Modernista” aesthetic. Another unique spot is the spa of La Fontcalda, with springs of mineral and thermal water and a Neoclassical building from the 18th century.
